Coffee History

It is believed that coffee was first discovered and consumed as early as the 9th century in Ethiopia.

The first coffee houses in Europe opened in the mid-1600s.

The first consumer automatic drip coffee maker was produced in 1972 by Mr. Coffee. Braun produced one for commercial use in 1963.

Coffee Production

Coffee is prepared from roasted seeds (the beans) which come from the cherries of coffee trees. Coffee berries are usually picked by hand.

More than 53 countries grow coffee. Of these, two thirds of the world’s coffee comes from Central and South America. Brazil is the top producer; other high producers are Columbia and Vietnam.

The only state in the U.S. where coffee is grown commercially is Hawaii.

Coffee Consumption

It has been estimated that over half of the adults in the U.S. drink coffee daily.

In the majority of North America and Europe, people drink about a third the amount of coffee as they do regular drinking water.

It is predicted that worldwide coffee production will reach seven million metric tons by 2010.

Coffee and Revolutions

In 1675, Charles II attempted to shut down English coffee houses because of fear of the liberal ideas being discussed in them.

Coffee houses in Paris were a key backdrop for discussions of thoughts that led to the French revolution.

The Boston Tea Party was planned in the Green Dragon coffee house in Boston in 1773.
